    2. If you want to translate a new word from a source language to a target language, you can choose three kinds methodーtranscription(JP:音声転写、翻音), transliteration(JP:文字転写、翻字), and free translation(JP:意訳). Transcription is translating a word as a set of sounds. The most familiar example for us is Katakana-word. The merit of transcription is that both a source language speaker and a target language speaker can understand the same set of sounds. For example, a Japanese word "情報" can't be understood by English people, but a Katakana-word "インフォメーション" can be understood by them as an English word "information". Let's see another way of translating. Transliteration is translating a word character by character. Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew and Arabic alphabet have the same origin, Phoenician alphabet. So in most cases we can convert each character in one to one correspondence. The merit of transliteration is that it is not necessary to think about how to pronounce a word or the words meaning. Furthermore, sometimes this kind of translated words help linguists to decode ancient alphabets. However, writing systems not native to Phoenician alphabet such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean can't be transliterated. Free transliteration is the most popular way of translation. Some Japanese words such as "社会", "自由", "衛生", "個人",are free translated. The merit of free translation is that target language speakers can understand the meaning of the word without knowledge of the source language. However, at the same time it means the source language speakers cannot understand the translated word. Let's translate a geographical word"高田馬場駅".If you choose free translation, it would be converted into "The horse field in the highland rice field station".This may be understood by English people, but when they ask Japanese "Where is The horse field in a highland rice field station?", Japanese people must be confused. If you choose the transcriptional way, it will be converted into "Takadanobaba eki".That's ok, but foreign tourists couldn't understand what is "Takadanobaba eki". Is it a hospital? A school? Or a park? As a matter of fact, Tokyo Metro uses "Takadanobaba station". This word is a compromise but both Japanese and English people could understand what the word means. This is the most important thing when you translate a geographical word. Thus, if you want to translate a new word, you have to be careful about how you use the word, and in what situation the word will be used. Then you have to combine these methods. Carelessness about these things makes your translated word useless. There weren’t many corrections - well done! 👍🏻

    2. I think I should read books to my son as long as he wants me to. My son cannot read words by himself so I have to read books to him anyways. But even if he could read by himself, I would still read to him if he wanted me to do so. There can be many reasons that children still ask you to read out loud even though they can read by themselves. Children who recently learn phonics can read books by themselves. But they have to pay attention to decode words so much that it is hard to enjoy the story as they read. They have to read some easy books such as readers to practice their reading skill, which don’t match their cognitive level. So they want you to read some books where they can actually enjoy the story. Some children may like the moment when their parents read books to them even though they can read comfortably by themselves. They may feel the parents pay full attention to them, so they can share real stories of their life that they may not do at other times. I don’t think it is beneficial to push children to read by themselves. Eventually they will become an independent reader. I quite enjoy myself reading books to my son, so there is no reason, whatsoever, to stop doing this so early.
