A: The child had been smoking a cigarette when his mother came home. The child has been smoking ever since he was nine. The first is action that was ongoing but then completed at a point in the past. The second is action the was ongoing in the past and has continued to the present.

A: @manuela_28: Um "haben" zu sagen kann man einmal "to have got" und "to have" verwenden.
"have got" benutzt man eher im britischen englisch, "have" ist mehr im amerikanischen englisch vorhanden.
Eigentlich ist es somit egal, ob man in einem Satz "have got" oder "have" verwendet, mit zwei kleinen Ausnahmen:
Wenn man die Abkürzung 've/'s benutzt, kann man das nur in Kombination mit 'got':
"I've got a pen in my pocket"(richtig)
"I've a pen on my pocket"(falsch)
Außerdem kann man "have got" natürlich nur benutzen, wenn es um Besitztümer geht und nicht um etwas anderes:
"I had an accident"(richtig)
"I had got an accident"(falsch)
