An action is something you do, you can "take action" which means you're going to do something. An event is like a big thing like a party or even "a main event" is the biggest thing in an array of things.
You can perform actions and you can attend events.

An event, more broadly, is something that happens. Examples: Your birthday, an earthquake, eating lunch, an election.
You might be there when the event happens, but you don't normally "do" the event. Which is what an action is. "I kick the ball" would be an action. But "I do the earthquake" doesn't make sense because you can't take action on an event.
