"They backed away, scooped up their boards, and ran toward the dumpster with whick they had blocked the alley, none the richer, maybe wiser, but probably neither."

In the sentence above, I don't understand the part "none the richer, maybe wiser."
Could anyone clarify for me, or rephrase in other way?
