Question about English (US)
I am confused about "Mueller's legal team obtained an extension on that deadline to a week after they file any post-trial motions, but his lawyers have not yet filed any post-trial motions."(3rd paragraph)
Q1:
What does overall meaning of this paragraph?
Q2:
Why is "file" of "they file any post-trial motions" the present form?
(while "obtained" of "Muller's team obtained" is the past form....)
Q3:
Does "his lawyers" refer to "Manafort's lawyers?"
Context>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
Paul Manafort is currently in prison but that's not yet the end of the story for the former Trump campaign chairman.
He was convicted in August in federal district court in the Eastern District of Virginia of five counts of tax fraud, one count of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts and two counts of bank fraud. However, the jury deadlocked on three counts of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts, and seven counts of bank fraud and bank fraud conspiracy. A mistrial was declared and the special counsel was ordered to decide whether to retry Manafort before the end of August.
Mueller's legal team obtained an extension on that deadline to a week after they file any post-trial motions, but his lawyers have not yet filed any post-trial motions.
Meanwhile, in his criminal case pending in federal court in Washington, D.C., Manafort then agreed to plead guilty to one count of participating in a conspiracy against the United States, and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Manafort said he would cooperate with the investigation. In the written agreement, he "agrees that the sentencing in [the D.C.] case and in the [Virginia case] may be delayed until [Manafort's] efforts to cooperate have been completed, as determined by the Government…."

1: Mueller's team got permission to decide whether to retry Manafort to a week after any post-trial motions, but no post-trial motions have been filed yet.
2: They obtained the permission in the past, but the "file" is hypothetical; it did not happen in the past because it has not happened yet. Present is used because it is hypothetical.
3: I think they mean Mueller's team, but the antecedent is unclear. It is a poorly written paragraph in that sense.

Regarding:

Should it say??
1: Mueller's team "can get" permission to decide whether to retry Manafort to a week after any post-trial motions, but no post-trial motions have been filed yet.

@monica8 No, they already have the permission. So it’s past tense.

They got an extension after they file any post trial motions, but they have not filed any post trial motions. So I think they did not get an extension??????

- English (US)
The extension is dependent on whether they file the motions. So they have the extension, but it only applies if they file the motions. They haven’t filed the motions, but they can if they want.
