Rednecks aren't always farmers, either.

If you watching twd, tell me: Merle is a redneck, right?

The term redneck did originate with farmers in American southern states. Spending a lot of time in the sun turns your neck red from sunburn. Jantran explanation is correct. But, in the part of the south I live in white people will refer to themselves as rednecks. To them it signifies being country, down to earth and enjoying simple pleasures. But, you would only call a friend a redneck.

I don't watch TWD but it says on Merle's wikipedia that he's a Southern redneck. And he's racist and misogynistic.
So yeah, he's a redneck.

Well, as mentioned above, it can be a point of pride, or even a matter of playful self-deprecation. For instance, I'm from rural NC and have a somewhat strong accent, but I'll playful refer to myself as a redneck or a yokel sometimes, especially for contrast's sake.
