暗くなるにつれ(て)怖かった。
I was scared as (something) got darker.
"(かっ)た" is just a word to show a past.
暗くなるにつれ(て)怖くなった。
I got/was getting scared as (something) got darker.
"なる" means to change to a new feeling, situation, or state. 怖い＋なる＋(かっ)た＝怖くなった. "怖くになった" is incorrect.
"つれて" can be used to happen at (almost) the same time as something else.
