The word “empty” doesn’t make sense here. Did you mean “I knew you were there?”

Interesting. That’s hard to get from the first part of the sentence. If it’s part of a story that set the scene to make the reader or listener expect that meaning, your sentence would be correct. Otherwise you might want to add “spiritually” to your sentence.
