Question about English (US)

I was traveling in the Southern Hemisphere, when I noticed in the night sky some unfamiliar stars line into a curious shape, forming a constellation. Among constellations are those that have such names as nautical apparatus or tropical animals have. Whence exactly their names came I never know, but I witness a portion of something—what had been cherished by, or had captivated, sailors some hundreds of years ago. does this sound natural?

Hi. I translated a Japanese passage into English and would like to learn which expression is good and which is wrong or unacceptable. Would you make some corrections or just point out any odd expressions? Thank you in advance.
