Why "is" is used in this case when "a lake and a mountain" are plural?
- English (US)
It's one lake and one mountain. It would be "are" if there were multiple lakes and multiple mountains.

I'm sorry. What I meant is "a lake and a mountain" are 2 objects. So shouldn't it be "are" in this case?
- English (US)
But since each object is singular, you would use "is" and connect them with "and". There is A lake and [there is] A mountain
