It's similar with "해요". And slightly different!
"하거든요" is used when you want to introduce or explain something that is new to the listener, and usually additional information is followed.
"이 사과가 참 달아요." = This apple tastes very sweet.
"이 사과가 참 [달거든요]. 그래서 이거로 쥬스를 만들었어요." = This apple tastes very sweet, so I made juice with it.
Or often times, it is used with "왜냐하면" =because.
"이 사과로 쥬스를 만들었어요. 왜냐하면 이 사과가 참 [달거든요.]"
= I made juice with this apple, because this apple tastes very sweet.
