it is basicaly the same, although 'ale' is more common. 'nýbrž' is used more in poems or novels, usually to change things up. In the example you've just provided would 'ale' fit better.

@amnesiaqwerty2 nýbrž is an old word, we use ale in everyday conversations

@amnesiaqwerty2 Nýbrž is literary and a bit outdated. Although it can be always replaced by 'ale', the contrary isn't true. Nýbrž can only be used if the first sentence is NEGATIVE. That's why your example with nýbrž is incorrect:
Nepřišel večer, nýbrž ráno. (formal)
Nepřišel večer, ale ráno. (common)
Nepřeji si červené jablko, nýbrž jen žluté.
Nepřeji si červené jablko, ale jen žluté.
