Question about English (US)

What does as it were mean?

I'm thinking about this sentence:
"They(=my new circumstances) had, as it were, an extent and mass for which I had not been prepared and in the presence of which I found myself, freshly, a little scared as well as a little proud."
The protagonist went to a big house, where she had decided to work, and now, she was trying getting used to her new circumstances.
