Alarmed is extremely concerned or worried, shocked at himself.
Drunk is inebriated, intoxicated with alcohol. He spent most of the 1980's means he lost almost 10 years of his life, due to his alcoholic withdrawal from real life.

(However, I think it isn't typo because I found the sentence in articles of "conceit" of Oxford Dictionary of ENGLISH(2003) and The New Oxford American Dictionary Second Edition(2005). They say conceit means "a fanciful notion" and add the sentence.
So, my comment "I don't understand 'conceit', especially." is wrong. I'm so sorry. I don't understand why I did write it. )
I don't understand "alarmed" and "drunk" and ”he spent most of the 1980s drunk [conceit/ concept]”.

@giya Yes, but I would assume he “is” alcoholic, rather than almost alcoholic.
