want to: “i want to buy something.” to desire ( seems more casual )
would like to: “i would like to go somewhere today.” to also desire ( however, more polite. )
“would like” is more conditional while “want to” is present tense and shows a stronger wanting for a certain something.

When I say I want to it's something depends on my ability, desires and choices. But when I say I would like to, it depends either on the other person or in circumstances.
But sometimes they can mean the same thing.
- English (US)
want = to strongly desire
would like = to politely desire (can be strong or weak).
