Necessary implies that it is something that must be done or had for a certain task to be completed or situation to exist. Required implies that someone else told you that you must possess something. In summary: Necessary = Cannot exist or be done without it. Required = someone else is commanding you to have it.

The salt was necessary for the recipe to taste good.
The boss required her cooks to use salt with the recipe.
Using salt with the recipe was therefore both necessary and required.
