Question about English (US)

schools teach that adjective should be modified by the suffix "-er" when it's less than 3 syllables.(and "more" for over 3 syllables)

but I hear people use "more fun" "not funnier".

what is the logic there?
is that fun as in 'more fun' a noun, not an adjective by any chance???
