Question about English (US)

Tents are hard. does this sound natural?

Does it make sense? It's from a movie.
After failing to build a tent, a boy says "Tents are hard."
I think it should be "To building tents is hard." or "Building tents is hard."
The boy is not supposed to be a character who speaks poor English, so that's why I'm curious.
