Since there's no answers yet, I'll give it a shot.
The whole phrase, or actually the whole spirit behind 頑張る isn't really present in the west, which makes it very hard to translate. Same with 一生懸命 and the likes. We just "do our best" or "work very hard", anything else sounds a bit weird (like "I'll go to/break the limits!" etc.) at least I haven't come across good expressions yet that are complimentary to the unbroken Japanese spirit ~.^
