Manchester is the second largest city by population. It is also incredibly diverse so it is quite similar to London. It was an industrial city in the past. It is also home to two football teams that are famous worldwide (Manchester United and Manchester City).
Birmingham also used to be an industrial city and that is what it was largely known for in the past. It is the third largest city by population.
Glasgow is the only city on the list which is in Scotland. It was quite famous in the past for building ships. It has the reputation of being quite a rough city nowadays.
Liverpool is another city which was industrial in the past. It is where the Beatles originated from and many musicians came from there. Liverpool also has two football teams that are considered rivals (Liverpool and Everton).
Bristol is a small city which is close to Cardiff in Wales. It is known to have many people who work in creative industries and it has the reputation of having many hipsters.
I don't know enough about Leeds or Sheffield unfortunately!
All of these cities have very good universities that consistently rank highly on the league tables and are considered top universities worldwide.

@FrankWilliam1 But it's a very easy mistake to make because Glasgow has the larger population of the two cities so it's a minor one!
