Question about Japanese

I found this example sentence for 接する:
村の東に接して湖がある。
I am a bit confused why it uses て-Form. I would expect it to be a relative clause and therefore would have used short form:
村の東に接する湖がある。
Would this be fine as well? Is there a difference, between the 2?

よろしくお願いします。
