Both correspond to the english possessive "my", as in my school, my job, my dad etc... The difference is made on the nature of the word it qualifies. If the following word is a masculine word OR begins with a vowel, then "mon" must be used. If the following word is a feminine word AND begins with a consonnant, then you must use "ma". For instance : Mon ami (boy), Mon amie (girl) --> "Mon" must be used. First because "ami" is masculine, second because "amie" is feminine AND begins with a vowel. Ma maison is a feminine word beginning with a consonnant --> "Ma" must be used
