“特别/非常”在生活中适用的范围更广，是很口语化的词，It is like the word "very" in English. 能用“格外”的句子，常常能被“特别/非常”替换；但是反过来则不一定可以。
情况类似的词还有“分外”。
如果你想精确用词，那么“格外”在字意上指在通常规格之外。
举一个例子，“这朵花格外鲜艳”，也可以说“这朵花特别/非常鲜艳”，但是如果说话的人是想表达“这朵花比这类花应有的颜色还要艳丽”，那么“格外”用词就更加精准了。
