Question about English (US)

Hello guys,
My question is about the Active and Passive Constructions. I remember reading somewhere that it is advisable to use the Active over Passive wherever possible. But in the following sentence;

"He quit his job because the company did not pay him for over a year"

I want to change it to eliminate the subject (the company) to shift the emphasis on the action itself (paying). Is the following correct;

"He left his job without being paid for a year"

Thanks in advance.
