"Swear" and "pledge" are basically the same thing, a formal promise. A promise you make in front of a crowd or group of people.
A "vow" is an unbreakable promise. Whether its formal or private makes no difference.

When I hear "pledge", I imagine someone making an offering, holding it above their head while they're on their knees. A knight offering his sword to a king is "pledging fealty."
Normally, you "swear by/on something." "I swear by all that is holy that I will end this heresy," "I swear on my mother's grave I'll help you, no matter the cost."
A "vow" is a promise that's made very seriously. Wedding vows are an example of this.
