What does つらい mean?

I was just wondering if there's any situation where つらい used by itself, not on the end of a verb stem, can mean something positive? I've had a couple of people say that certain dance steps of mine at dance practice were つらい but as a good thing. The steps were small and into the ground, perhaps they were "hidden" or something like that. I'm not sure, but it was definitely in a good context because the instructor today told another student he should try what I was doing. Thanks for your help!
