Both are used for comparisons, but with different sentence structures:

"Like": Use it to compare two things.
Your dog looks like a bear.
Is it raining outside? You look like you jumped into a pool!
This tastes like chocolate.
He acts like a child. (= He is immature.)
Like many other students, he is often late to class.

"As": Can also be used for comparisons.
Nobody sings as well as she does.
We behave as though we were brothers. (We behave like brothers.)
Notice that comparisons with "as" tend to be more complex. I recommend using "like," which is simpler, more informal, and more common in everyday speech.

"As" can also state a function or role:
She used the tapestry as a decoration.
She joined the group as a researcher.
He worked as a teacher for a long time.

A distinction between the two:
As your father, I'll help you as much as I can. = I am your father, so I will help you. (Here, "as your father" is a function or role of the speaker.)
Like your father, I'll help you as much as I can. = I am not your father, but I will help you like your father does. (Here, "like your father" is a comparison between your father and the speaker.)
