Question about English (US)

Was English in the past time different from English spoken by Americans now?
Japanese grammar, vocab and the way to ref the letters were different from one in a long time ago. Japanese students have to learn Japanese classic story in the school and it's not easy because it's completely different. For example, in Japanese spoken in 1000 years ago, かわいい(cute) meant beautiful and うつくし(beautiful) meant cute.
Does English have the same thing?
