Question about Japanese

What's the difference between 連絡します and 知らせます?

Like from the dictionary 知らせます means " to inform " but in my text book it wrote 引越しの日までに郵便局に新しい住所を連絡しておいてください。
And to my knowledge 連絡します means to contact or get in touch with someone?
Why not use 知らせます instead? as in " inform the post office?
