Question about English (US)

As for this sentence:

"Tom called 5 minutes ago."

A textbook translated it as "5分前にTomから電話がありました," which means I (or our group) received a phone call from Tom 5 minutes ago, but I think the original sentence only means "he called 5 minutes ago" and doesn't imply that you received a phone call from him.

Do you possibly know who he called without any context?
Would you think the sentence as "Tom called me 5 minutes ago"?
