When used as interrogatives, 어떤 is more like which and 무슨 is more like what. e.g.,

어떤 걸로 드릴까요? Which one would you like to order?
어떤 색으로 그릴거야? Which color would you like to paint it in?

무슨 생각해? What are you thinking of?
무슨 일로 오셨나요? What brings you here?

어떤 can also be used for “what”, but I think 무슨 is more natural there.

When 어떤 is used as a determiner, it’s like “some” or “certain”.
어떤 분이 전해 달래요. Some gentleman left this for you.

무슨 can be used in rhetorical questions:
무슨 놈의 문제가 이따위야! What a retarded question this is!
