Question about English (US)

Let's say I took part in a race, and came in last.
In that case, which one sounds correct?

A: I was last.
B: I was the last.

When I was watching a ski race (school ski race) on TV, I heard a student say "You're last!" to a teacher.
I wondered if "the" is needed before "last".
If "the" isn't necessary, is it kind of a similar principle as "come in last/first"?
