Question about Japanese

How do you say this in Japanese? 本人 (in English)

I see it translated as "in person" in practice, but every english definition I can find gives 本人 as "they themself" or "the person in question". 例えば「彼本人がやってきた」の英訳は"He came in person". May someone explain this to me?
