Question about Korea, Republic Of
Why is marijuana demonized so much in Korea??
This has confused me for a little while because marijuana is legal where I live and I don’t understand why it’s such a serious crime in Korea. In my opinion, alcohol is much worse than weed.

There are some countries that prohibit alcohol.
There are some countries that prohibit drinking alcohol on the beach.
There are some countries that prohibit porno.
There are some countries that prohibit wearing a bikini.
There are some countries that prohibit weed.
That's it. it's just how the world works.
You know, we can't understand everything.😀

@pascala34 I do understand that, but I’m just curious why it’s such a serious crime in Korea. Weed is not as dangerous as a lot of people, even those who live in places where it’s legal, think it is. But I’ve noticed that in Korea in particular, say a celebrity is caught with weed, or we find out that they tried weed in the past. This information could ruin their whole career. Meanwhile, in other places where it’s still not legal, it might still be a big deal, but it wouldn’t ruin that person’s life.
I’m just wondering, how much do most Koreans even know about marijuana? Do they know about it’s benefits?? Or is it just widely known as some kind of dangerous, deadly drug?

@argxenta That's because it's illegal, so it considered as a bad thing. And I don't know much about marijuana and I see it as one of bad drugs. I guess many people will not know well about it too.

@gogumi That’s fine, if that’s what Korean people are taught, then unfortunately that’s what they’re going to think.
I know some adults that use marijuana for different reasons. A lot of people just use it because it’s fun. It makes them feel funny and they might use it to help with stress.
But some people use it for medical reasons, too. My dad knows a woman who suffers from really bad anxiety, and she needs to use marijuana frequently in order to function properly. Marijuana makes people feel calm, which can help people with problems such as anxiety.

I understand what your point is. Of course, I do not know much about marijuana due to it's forbidden. Several months ago, the government permitted using the medical purpose weed. I heard about this on the news.
The thing is not how dangerous the weed, is. As you said, alcohol and cigarette are much more toxic and dangerous however, we don't prohibit such things. Those things are considered as the traditional food or things that we need for life while weed is considered something dangerous in korea. Recently, cigarette's concept has been changed though. I think this perception could be more important than how it really harms people. No matter how dangerous it is or not, we consider drugs and weed are very dangerous and unnecessary. Such view of this matter is the thing when it comes to deciding our behavior.
So, Some celebrities you mentioned were not in big trouble because they took dangerous things. They were in trouble because what they did illegal and because their behavior was not fit in our perspective.

In public perception, alcohol is not so bad if you enjoy it properly. But unlike alcohol, marijuana is not widespread in Korea, and when it spreads beyond control and cannot be controlled by the state, like the U.S., there goes a story of legalization and illegalization.
In Korea, Public health center is operating a treatment program for people who want to quit smoking. What does that mean? If marijuana becomes more common than cigarettes in Korea, then the state does subsidize anti-marijuana treatment than Anti-Cigarettes.
Although marijuana helps reduce pain and stabilize the mind and body, it is problematic to just reduce pain without a fundamental solution to the cause of the disease. And these alternative painkillers (without marijuana) are prescriptions to alleviate the disease and fundamentally treat it. and also it's legal. so, we don't have to use marijuana.
As a result, In Korea, It's just an excuse to use marijuana because they don't have money to buy painkillers, and in fact, they want to have fun using it. A general perception in Korea, drugs are taken to cure diseases, not to be entertain. But in the U.S., teenagers sometimes make recreational drugs with cold medicines. As this becomes news, more and more people are trying similar ways in Korea.
In that passage of joyful route to high-end drugs(Meth, Coke, LSD..), marijuana is being a gate. Marijuana, which began to become popular among hippies in the '70s, was soon replaced by LSD by a desire for a higher stimulus among them. and one of those junkie hippies was Charles Manson and his family, who killed Roman Polanski's family. Exceptionally, There were others like 'Steve Jobs' too.
Although there someone argues it just individual choice and argues some wrong cases cannot happen to everyone. But it is the difference between the positions of the individuals and the state. The state is all of those possibilities must be considered. The state necessarily more conservative than the individual and could be banned or regulated something as a measure to protect the people.
There is a difference of think way between the U.S., where autonomy is organized on a state basis, and the people who grew up in a country that originally consisted of a single government control, like Korea. Anyways, Korea not randomly get to demonize something. Like any other society, we did enough considered case studies and hearing the expert's opinion too, and then we decided banned marijuana.
