Todo também pode ser usado sem outra palavra, com o sentido de "tudo".
Ele não sabe o todo = ele não sabe tudo
Nesse caso tem que usar o artigo: "o todo". Soa mais formal, e em certos casos pode soar estranho, então sempre opte por usar "tudo".
