Is the verb "to ride" (i think montar) used the same way as in english? For example, how would you say "to ride a bicycle" vs "riding in a car"? Same verb?

Yes, it's the same. For example:
-Voy a montar en bici para dar una vuelta.
-Me voy a montar ya en el coche (a child to his/her father).
And with horses is different, it is not "montar en", but "montar a".
-Mañana montaré a caballo.
