Question about Dutch

I came across this sentence today
(Als ik een auto zou hebben, ging ik ermee naar mijn werk)
Obviously, It means If I had a car, I would go to my work with it but the tricky thing is why (zou) appears in (Als clause) and not in the other clause just like in English If I had..., I would...
I know that I can also say : Als ik een auto had, zou ik ermee naar mijn werk gaan but that leads me to ask if there is a difference between the two structures and which one is more common in spoken and written language.
*Alvast bedankt*
*Gelukkig kerstfeest*
