민감한 주제에 대해서 상대가 질문을 하거나, 별로 이야기 하고 싶지 않은 주제일 때 슬쩍 대화 주제를 바꿔버리는 것을 '말을 돌린다'라고 해요.
여자친구: 오빠, 여기 맛있다고 했었지?
남자친구: 응, 저번에 여기서 먹어봤는데 맛있더라.
여자친구: 근데 누구랑 왔었어?
남자친구: 응? 아니, 근데 여기 맛있는데 음식 양이 적은 것 같아.

아니면 상대가 듣기 싫어하는 말일 경우에 직설적으로 말하기 어려울 때 '돌려 말한다'라고 해요.
직설적으로: 너 살 좀 빼.
돌려 말하면: 나 요즘 살 많이 찐 것 같아서 그런데 같이 저녁에 운동하지 않을래?
