Question about Japanese

Hello 👋 🙂

In the novel I am reading, I came across this sentence :

一文少なく払ったんだな!
He paid short of 1 文

Grammatically speaking, why did 少ない became 少なく?

Is it the contraction of:
少ない+に = in + insufficient (way) = insufficiently?

ありがとうございます! ☺
