Question about English (US)

“I was so nervous that I made a lot of mistakes.”

I want to express 「I was nervous so I made mistakes.」.
However I feel something wrong with my sentence.
This ‘that clause’ impresses me as degree of my tension, not a consequence.

Which is incorrect, this sentence or my intuition or both?
