You cannot teach an old dog new tricks. = Said when someone (usually an old person) changes slowly or not at all.
The detective is saying something like "I am too old to change my ways."

@komorebi2019 There is a saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." It's usually used to mean you can't make somebody change their behaviour.
In this case the detective would be the "old dog". Since a detective's job is to be suspicous, it is hard for them not to be suspicous. Not being suspicous would compare to a new trick.
