If you use as a subject, you couldn’t use 「ひとたち」.
ex)
ひとびとはたのしそうにしていた→OK
ひとたちはたのしそうにしていた→NG
And 「ひとたち」always use with 「この」「その」「あの」
like「このひとたち」
