Please help me with these sentences.

#1 We discussed the issue of a great deal of plastic garbage.
#2 We discussed the issue of a large amounts of plastic garbage.

When I wrote #1, I was told to write #2. Can you show me why #1 is unnatural?

I think the more natural way would be, we discussed the issue of large amounts of plastic waste.

A great deal is not normally used like that. It’s mostly used to describe knowledge, discussion, help etc.

Example, we discussed a great deal about the staggering amounts of plastic waste.
