I was also curious about the difference so I looked it up: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/questio...
Here's a summary of what it says:
- You use たいてい when you're describing the likelihood of something, i.e. when something is 80%-90% likely to be, based on previous experience or knowledge. It is usually used when there's a condition involved.
When it rains, he is usually (たいてい) absent from class. The condition here is "when it rains".
Most (たいてい) Japanese people like Miso soup. The condition here is "being a Japanese person".
- You use だいたい when there's no relation to past knowledge/experience.
It will be mostly (だいたい) clear today. I don't think you'll need an umbrella.
"Mostly clear" doesn't describe likelihood, so たいてい can't be used.
- だいたい is also used to mean "about / approximately", たいてい is not used this way.
To today's party, approximately (だいたい) how many guests will arrive?
- When unsure, use だいたい, it will be understood
Turned out longer than I expected... hope it helps!

Personally ,I use だいたい for percentages or numbers.
Ex.
たいてい is used for something very frequently
Ex.
