How do you count in Japanese? Why don't people just say 一二三四五。。。？

いち、に、さん、よん、ご、ろく、なな、はち、きゅう、じゅう
In kanji they do write them as the Chinese characters but the pronunciations are different.

Basically there are 2 ways of counting .
ひ ふ み よ いつ む なな や ここの とう that is from old Japanese .
いち に さん し ご ろく ひち（しち） はち きゅう じゅう that is from old Chinese and that sounds similar to Chinese such as いー ある さん すー うー りゅー ちー ぱー ちゅー しー . I am really not good at Chinese , though .
And then they were mixed . So they could be
いち に さん よん ご ろく なな（しち/ひち） はち きゅう とう（じゅう）
In old times , many Chinese people came to Japan as something like refugees , to run away from war .
So about things that is from old time , might have two ways of counting .
For example , about months ,
ひとつき or 一ヶ月（いっかげつ） as "a month"
ふたつき or 二ヶ月（にかげつ） as two months
みつき or 三ヶ月（さんかげつ） as three months .
After 4 , we just say the number and ヶ月 , though .
Maybe よつき as four months might be said by someone .
