Both refers to chopsticks. I never see and hear the word おてもと except on the paper case of disposal chopsticks in a restaurant.

@Robear: I'm not sure why, but some sorts of Japanese style restaurants still retain Japanese-like elegance in some ways. Indicating things in figurative ways is one of them. "おてもと" means something like "a thing to keep at hand." おしぼり(wet handkerchief), あがり(tea to drink at the end of meal), 紫 (soy sauce), おあいそ(billing), and etc.

はし(chopsticks) also means "edge". Some people think it is not good.
おてもと means "near myself" or something.
So, the restaurant people use the reverse word of はし.
