Question about Simplified Chinese (China)

What is the difference between kao and kaoshi?
Feel free to just provide example sentences.

From my understanding so far, kao3shi4 means to take an actual test but in my lesson, they have used kao3 in the following sentence:

wo yao kao ni = I want to test you

but can I say...

wo yao kaoshi ni? I guess kaoshi means to take an actual test, so this is wrong?
