In my vocabulary, almost never. I would tend toward, strong, sturdy, solid and so on. That doesn't mean it is not common elsewhere, I simply don't know.

I would also say not often! I think I only use it to describe flavours in cooking. That said, it is still a common word. Feel free to use it if it fits. It doesn't sound old at all.
