if I say "despite X blank", it means even though X is true, exists, or is present, blank doesn't exist, can't happen, isn't present, or isn't true etc. X is also usually understood to be something that results in "blank"

Example:

Despite being American, I can't speak English; despite it being summer time, I'm cold.

In the first example, it is usually understood that if you're an American, you can speak English. So, we use despite to show that even though I am an American (which usually means you can speak english) I cannot in fact speak english.

The same logic applies to the second example. It is usually warm or hot in the summer, so I say "despite it being summer" to make the point that "although usually summer is hot, right now I am cold".
