Question about English (US)

Cellphones have brought about great changes in the way people communicate with each other.

What does ”in the way” mean ?
Is ”to” possible instead ?
If you take ”in the way” out of the sentence,
Is this may sound strange ?

Thank you in advance !
I think that when using ”in the way” like this,
a lot of times people are just using it as a filler.
